Catching my eye: morning A through Z

Here’s what’s caught my eye this morning:

  • Calculated Risk has a run-down of the status of oil refineries in the areas of Louisiana and the Gulf Coast affected by Hurricane Katrina.
  • California Yankee has an excellent list of relief organizations working to help the victims of the hurricane. Give what you can.
  • Jeff Jarvis of Buzzmachine asks the hard question: should New Orleans be re-built? Through history many cities have been re-built on new locations after natural disasters. Does it make sense to re-build a below-sea level city with (we know now for certain) inadequate levees? UPDATE: Pundita’s asking the same questions:

The only question now is whether to rebuild or move New Orleans. If they want to rebuild, Louisiana has to spend megabucks on existing technologies or ask for new ones, if they want to perch a key American city below sea level between a river and a lake in a hurricane alley.

If they don’t have the bucks — either the federal government pulls a rabbit out of the hat or New Orleans is removed from the map.

I think the American public understands that — or they will, by the end of this week.

  • How are other countries reacting to the Katrina disaster? Well, Germans are criticizing us and Canadians are collecting for us. You learn who your friends are at times like these.
  • triticale waxes rhapsodic on the subject of martinis.
  • It’s Back to School for Stepping Stone.
  • Outside the Beltway has moved (at least temporarily) to its backup site. Hat tip: PoliBlog.

That’s the lot.

  • I’ve found that natural beeswax works best. Waxing rhapsodic with paraffin leaves a sticky residue.
