My Weekend in Atlanta

Last weekend I attended a family function in Atlanta last weekend—one of my nieces got married. The event was lovely. It took place at the Wheeler House and, consistent with my niece’s character, every detail was executed nearly flawlessly.

I hadn’t spent any time in Atlanta in decades and it’s grown over the years—many more tall buildings in the downtown area. I didn’t have much time for sightseeing. I did get some good barbecue.

I didn’t have much of an Internet connection and barely glanced at it. Hence my lack of posting.

Ah you were just up the road from me. I’m guessing that was Two Brothers BBQ, unless it was catered in house at the wedding venue?

  • When my wife and I went out to dinner after checking in to our hotel on Friday night, we went to Williamson Brothers. My review is that it was pretty darned good (for white folks barbecue).

As it works out the wedding reception had barbecue, too. I don’t know where they got it. It was good but not quite as good as Williamson Brothers.

Every reception should have barbecue, or something like it. Get out of the monkey suits and stupid dresses, wear normal clothes and eat good food rather than rubber chicken.

Oh so you were REALLY right down the road from me if you went to the Canton location (maybe you stayed closer into the city and went to the original one in Marietta.) Williamson Brothers is good but their sauce is a bit too peppery for my taste.

  • Yes, we stayed in Canton. The town of Canton is a charming little place. We toured the historical museum and walked around the town square. I was unaware that they had tried to raise silkworms in Georgia. Or that Georgia had a gold rush.

Checked out Ball Ground as well. Had lunch at Les Bons Temps. Their crayfish étouffée isn’t bad but everything else was mediocre. I make better.

Atlanta is one of the few major cities I have not spent any time in. About all I can say is that it’s not fun to drive through.

I’ve tried unsuccessfully to pan for gold in a nearby creek that others have luck with (Blankets Creek, also home to some great mountain bike trails.)

Lots of Cherokee history in the area too- our area in south Canton is called Sixes which was the name of one of the removal forts at the origin of the Trail of Tears.

We enjoy downtown Canton. There’s a quirky restaurant called Downtown Kitchen that’s pretty good, and a great sub shop. Can’t say that I’ve eaten anywhere in Ball Ground other than Two Brothers.

I checked out Two Brothers and it looked amazing! We had to use the wedding venue caterer though…, and it was excellent, “Talk of the Town”. We loved eating at The Burger Bus! Ball Ground is a charming historic town with historic charm, and eyes on the future too 🙂

I haven’t been to Ball Ground recently but generally the small towns of Cherokee county have been developing nicely- retaining a sense of history while revitalizing and modernizing the downtown areas. Canton has a developer renovating a historic building for additional restaurant and shop space, and one of the old denim mills has been converted to loft apartments. An second mill is in disrepair and I keep envisioning space for art studios and galleries- wish I had the capital or connections to invest in it.

The film and TV industry has infused some money in the area. Ball Ground hosted filming of a Tom Cruise movie that will be released later this year, and Justin Bateman is producing a Netflix series just about two miles from my home, on the shores of Lake Allatoona (though the setting is supposed to be the Ozarks, which I think may be the series title.)
