Walter Cronkite, 1916-2009 (Updated)

Retired CBS anchorman Walter Cronkite, once characterized as “the most trusted man in America has died:

Walter Cronkite, the television newsman whose steady baritone informed, reassured and guided the nation during the tumultuous 1960s and ’70s and who was still regarded as “the most trusted man in America” years after leaving his CBS anchor chair, has died. He was 92.

Cronkite died Friday at his home in New York after a long illness, according to CBS Vice President Linda Mason.

Rather than comment on his passing myself I’ll direct your attention to Art Buchwald’s amusing chronicling of Cronkite’s path to being the most trusted man in America, written in anticipation of his retirement and re-printed at The Washington Post.

Buchwald’s right. Not only has it been difficult to replace Cronkite, it’s been impossible.

Update

Joe Gandelman explains why we’ll never see another Walter Cronkite again.

Prayers to Walter’s family and friends. In his memory, for his fans I have collected some great sites and articles (more than 200) to know all about Walter Cronkite.
