Translation Requested

I’m afraid I need help with a translation of a phrase in Harold Meyerson’s most recent column. Here’s the phrase:

increasingly numerous Democratic mayors and city councils, are taking it upon themselves to raise wages

Does he mean that more and more Democratic mayors and city councils are raising the minimum wage in their jurisdictions (with which I agree) or that more and more mayors and city councils are dominated by Democrats (for which he presents no evidence)?

Youth wants to know.

I agree more generally that the republic is becoming less united almost by the hour. My preferred solution would be federalism and devolution but, sadly, more people seem to want imperialism.

Federalism only helps some of the symptoms. The larger problem is that there exists no common basis for being an American now. The main political philosophies now want war of all against all*, and that’s what they’re getting.

    * Actually, they want war of most against most, with themselves being part of a small, select group that unites to suck the rest of us dry.

Vanguardism. They’ll be disappointed with what actually happens.

IBGYBG is what they’re banking on.

  • I think they’re banking on they and their children being in charge forever and ever amen. What they’re forgetting is that Marat and Robespierre never stay in control. Every revolution has a Napoleon and he always ends up in charge. Marat and Robespierre are always murdered.

Not sure federalism will solve anything. In the red states that have fracking, they are now passing laws that will not let cities set their own limits on fracking. They must abide by state laws, which means they largely be unregulated and can frack wherever they want. We are just going to end up with a different set of oligarchs controlling each state.

    Steve,

Pick your poison – a handful of oligarchs shoving their policies down the throats of 350 million people or 50+ handfuls of oligarchs shoving their policies down a much smaller number of people at the state/local level. Personally, if given the choice, I much prefer the latter.

Andy- I predict a lot of overlap.
