Today’s Update on the Pet Food Recall—4/25/2007

One of the two remaining manufacturers whose pet foods were believed to have been contaminated with melamine through rice gluten concentrate imported from China has been revealed—SmartPak:

In addition, the pet food recall was extended Tuesday to SmartPak, which makes dog and horse food. FDA officials also said another unnamed pet food manufacturer was checking its records to determine whether it had received either wheat gluten or rice protein concentrate from China that’s been contaminated with melamine.

I was rather surprised at this. In addition to the food that has been recalled, one production run of their LiveSmart Weight Management Chicken and Brown Rice Dog Food, SmartPak manufactures a number of premium dog food brands including the Newman’s products and Flint River. I haven’t found a statement from SmartPak or the FDA yet. When I do so I’ll link to it.

As I reckon it that leaves one manufacturer that we know of that hasn’t announced a recall.

The contaminated rice gluten made its way into feeds fed to hog in at least five states—California, North Carolina, South Carolina, New York, and Utah. It may also have been present in foods sold in Missouri and Ohio. At this point it is not known whether the melamine made it from the animal feed into the human food supply.
