This Far and No Farther

I have just heard Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell give what I believe to be the most statesmanlike speech of his lengthy career in support of the Congress’s tallying and approving the votes of the Electoral College which elected Joe Biden the next president of the United States. Hatred of him on the part of Democrats is such that I doubt he will receive credit for it and its opposition to the most partisan members of his own caucus suggest he’ll receive little credit for it from Republicans either.

The facts corroborate his assertion that Democrats have repeatedly challenged election results over the last several decades. A slippery slope has been created that threatens confidence in our political system permanently. The only way to stop that slide is to declare “this far and no farther”. Both political parties must accept the results of this election and the Republicans who think otherwise are not covering themselves in glory as they apparently believe.

His speech will go unheard, way too late. Protesters in the chambers now.

  • Those aren’t protesters. They’re rioters.

You are correct, they are rioters, not patriots, not protesters in any sense of the the word.

The result will surely be less public access of the Capitol building.

What surprise me if Trump’s kids didn’t tell Dad is how destructive this whole “Samson” routine is to them.

The best thing would be for Pence and Mark Meadows to tell Trump to resign tomorrow. The next 2 weeks with a situation like this with a changeover of power due is not tolerable.

Trump will not resign, this is Trump, he is this situation.

The best thing and what will happen are two different things.

I will say this, after today, I don’t think Trump would get the 34 Senators needed to avoid removal from office.

Trump has us, darn if we do and darn if we don’t, Is it
    checkmate or stalemate?

All I see are middle aged people ambling down the street with their hands in their pockets because it’s cold. Yes, they carry flags saying “Jesus saves” and “Trump” but to call that a riot is a partisan lie.
    Our democracy deserves honesty.

Sorry, I didn’t know about the breach or the woman shot.
Watching CNN at sunset for an hour and no mention of that?

Driving 56 in a 55 zone is breaking the law. So is murder. Democrats were driving a few miles over the speed limit. Trump in this case is committing at least aggravated assault.

In isolation the McConnell speech was good. In the context that he was the guy who wouldn’t let judicial nominees from the other party have hearings and votes. McConnell has been a prime player in undermining democracy. In context this is a hypocrite doing CYA. Better than making things worse so he gets credit for that.

Not voting on a judicial nominee is more like driving 45 mph in a 55 mph zone.

??? Not voting was not a question of legality. It is a question of the democratic process working. McConnell stopped it from working, because he could.
