The World Goes On

Despite the U. S. news media’s fixation on the events in Charlottesville, the world went on last week. You might find the Associated Press’s weekly update of events in the South China Sea interesting and enlightening. And here’s a summary of activities in Syria on both the parts of the Syrian government and the American-led forces.

Eleven people were shot to death in Chicago over the weekend, mostly on the South Side.

You should take Southfront with a whopping grain of salt. They’re Putin propagandists who write glowing reports on Russian activities and critical reports on all things American.

  • I take all news reports about Syria with a grain of salt. To read the main American outlets the Russians are sitting on their hands while the Americans do all the heavy lifting.

True about the “grain of salt” thing, but Southfront isn’t above making s**t up, particularly when it came to the gas attacks on Syrian civilians.

  • A digression from this post but an interesting subject nonetheless. I don’t know what to think. The independent analyses of the attacks seem to support the notion that their perpetrators were DAESH rather than the Syrian government.

The Syrian government was behind all the major sarin attacks. The actual evidence all points to them.

Anyway, WRT Charlottesville, I think it’s notable that no one got shot and there was not even a firearm discharge especially given the level of vitriol and violence.

Are people in Chicago afraid of being shot to death? I know i would be.

  • Nearly all of the homicides are taking place in just six neighborhoods on the South and West Sides. I live on the Northwest Side. I’m not worried at all.

If I were black and living in the Austin, North Lawndale, or Englewood neighborhoods, I’d be worried. Heck, I’d be moving.

The Austin neighborhood where the largest number of homicides take place is 8 miles due south of where I’m sitting.

The two interesting stories for me was the finding that North Korea’s ICBM’s are being powered by a factory from the Ukraine that used to supply the Russian military. Certainly its possible the Russians illicitly got the factory to help NK, but at least as likely the Ukrainian factory went rogue after it lost business due to Russia not wanting to depend on an enemy. It reminds me the West still don’t really know the Ukraine and what it signed up for when it helped overthrow the Ukraine’s government.

The second one was the WSJ covering how brokers are making more money from their customers due to the fiduciary rule. It turns out for the average customer, moving to a fee based account means paying more then paying the broker commissions. If moving to fee based accounts doesn’t help boost returns — and I suspect it won’t move the needle — then a rule that’s supposed to help investors will do the reverse. Its a good reminder that regulations cannot be judged based on intent; but on how they work in practice.

Kinda funny Dave, If you think about it, only eight miles, are they too ignorant to realize your neighborhood is where the money is?
If your’e gonna commit murder, make some money off it.

  • These are gang wars—gangs shooting at each other.
