The Trib Demurs

The editors of the Chicago Tribune have endorsed Marco Rubio on the Republican side and declined to endorse a Democratic candidate. Here’s the conclusion of the editorial:

Agree or disagree with Marco Rubio on various issues, he offers Illinois voters the framework of a presidency that realistically could exist. Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders have not met this fundamental economic test. We’re keeping an open mind, hoping that whichever of them prevails will meet that test in the general election campaign. Because promises, pledges and policies mean nothing to a gravely indebted American government that can afford only to window-shop.

In the Republican primary contest, the Tribune endorses Marco Rubio. In the Democratic contest, no endorsement.

Agree or disagree with their conclusions on the candidates but don’t dismiss them. Hillary Clinton may be the inevitable Democratic candidate but that alone won’t make her electable. Her electability will hinge on her ability to energize voters who are presently being energized by, among other things, rejection of Marco Rubio and Hillary Clinton and establishment politics, generally.

I believe the correct answer was “None of the above” for both parties. The Trib loses.
