As people like me who allow Microsoft to update their computers automatically must surely know, Tuesday night/Wednesday morning is patch night and about 10% of the time, every couple of months, when I come down the stairs and look at my computer I’m confronted with the Blue Screen of Death: the system has crashed. I’ve developed substantial sang-froid about it and spend the several hours it takes to get the system back up again.
I understand the complexity of the problem that Microsoft has on its plate. Probably better than 99.999% of the people out there. However, much of the problem is of their own making and the cost of their success.
And people wonder why Microsoft isn’t more trusted. I think that Windows operating systems are like a bad marriage. You stay together for the sake of the kids.
Change your update settings to: “Download updates but let me choose whether to install them.”
When the notification of available updates pops up, do a search to see if any problems have been encountered by others.
You are basically acting as a first adopter without benefiting from the use of new technology.
You are the guy who bought the original iPhone for $599 only to see the new iPhone come out a year later at half the price; except, you repeat this process every quarter.
By a very crude definition, that is “insanity.”
