That was an apropos City Journal piece describing the intolerance on the left.
The early attraction to the democratic party for me was the notion it represented a greater freedom of speech, ideas, social norms etc. Unfortunately, though, liberalism has gradually devolved into a smug cocoon of “political correctness.” Receptive discourse is limited to what the new liberalism deems is socially, scientifically, or even spiritually correct. IOW, thinking outside of the liberal box is not only discouraged but also disparaged.
