Situation in Oaxaca continues

Mark in Mexico continues to provide the best coverage of this story bar none. “Striking teachers” continue to hold the Oaxaca town center. A wide range of groups appears to be getting into the act:

As I commented in an earlier post, every fringe group of lunatics that one can name here in Mexico has arrived and is “participating” in the insurrection.

  • The Communists, The Anarchists, the Socialists, the EZLN (the insurrectionists in Chiapas), and more groups than I can name are here. So, the damage may or may not have been done by the members of the teachers’ union but they will get all the blame.

Mark’s got photos, a description of the situation, and commentary.

I don’t know enough about the situation to know the right or wrong of things but I do know that Oaxaca is no village. IIRC it’s got a population roughly that of Denver’s. If Denver were in the hands of protesters, I’d think it would make the world news but this story is getting hardly a peep. As before Mark is doing yeoman’s service.

Previous post on this subject:

UPDATE: When I was visiting a client’s site this afternoon, I checked out a local Spanish language newspaper, Hoy, a product of the Chicago Tribune company. The paper covered the story with a meaty page 3 story.

ANOTHER UPDATE:  Commentary from The Mex Files here.   Updated here.
