Quick glances at the issues of the day

Here are a few quick glances at issues that (for some reason or other) people seem to be excited about.

  • CIA Leaks/Mary McCarthy

I am shocked, shocked that there are leaks coming from the White House or that a Democratic activist working for the CIA would leak info to the press that might help Democrats. I’m happy to let justice take its course on this.

  • the new Iraqi PM

It’s too early to tell. Iraq was a mess 70 years ago, it’s a mess now, and it will be a mess 70 years from now. The question at hand is what kind of mess it will be and my hope is that it’s the most liberal democratic mess possible. I believe that will mean that we’ll still have troops there but, then, what do I know?

  • new Bin Laden tape

Who cares? This is not now and never has been the War Against Bin Laden. If he’s still alive he has little ability to influence day to day activities in Waziristan let alone elsewhere.

I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for justice to descend. Did you notice the plea deal that the Justice Department offered Sandy Berger? That plea deal was so lenient, it actually shocked the presiding judge, who, on his own, strengthened the punitive portions of the deal.

The Justice Department under this President, slavishly devoted to “new tone,” isn’t going to pursue this with the vigour required to see genuine justice done.

    Sad but true.
