Protocol

This story at the Daily Mail is surreal. Read it and weep.

It certainly makes you wonder how seriously the isolation protocols are being taken.

  • Other than his apparent handling of a waste bag, I don’t see the problem since the PATIENT was in a biohazard suit, too. I wouldn’t do it, but I wouldn’t do it with a biohazard suit, either.

Apparently that role requires that he not be in such a suit as it restricts vision. I’d expect more than street clothes, though, just for appearances sake. He should have at least had an ugly golf shirt* on. Those repell lots of things.

    * Think something from the Herb Tarlick collection.

So I saw a story today that the guy who is the Homeland Security point person in Dallas, Judge Clay Jenkins, is calling for bans on public transportation for Ebola patients and contacts.

I became curious and looked him up, found out that two weeks ago he pulled his own “clipboard guy” stunt, entering the apartment of Thomas Duncan (which contained his soiled bed linens) while wearing no protective gear. And then made a big show of personally driving the relatives to their new living quarters, ostensibly to calm the public’s fears about possible exposure.

My, what a difference two weeks (and public criticism) makes. His priorities have shifted from calming fears toward advocating a far more cautious approach.

I’ll steal a great line from a commenter at Althouse: An important part of the protocol is covering your ass.

To the fainting couch. Finally got to see a full tape. The patient was also in a full suit.
