Point of Information: Bananas

I’m working on a post on the world trade in bananas and I’m looking for information. Anybody have a good source? Know something about agricultural trade in general, bananas in particular?

  • Might want to start with the FAO Commodity Study. There might be a more recent one, that’s just the first one to come up on my search.

If you’re looking for something more specific, let me know.

  • Thanks. I’ve already got that (it was the first place I went). What I’ve got so far is that bananas are the most valuable export for practically every banana-exporting country. I knew that already. What I’m looking for is dollar or Euro value by country and total exports by country in Euro’s or dollars.

  • The data’s a decade old, but half of what you’re looking for is here. I know for a fact that Ecuador’s banana exports are now over $1.5b, so you might want to adjust the figures up 50% or so.

Also, the bottom half of the list is very different now: see here.

  • Total exports are here. You can see there that Ecuador’s total exports are about $12.5 billion, so bananas constitute about 12% of the total.

  • Dave — one of my favorite professors is a banana expert — John Soluri —

He has always been very accessible, plus his CV could be a decent start.

  • What a great reference! Thanks, fester. I’ll take a look.
