Penny Pritzker Named Commerce Secretary

Chicago business executive, philanthropist, and political fundraiser Penny Pritzker has been nominated to fill the post of Secretary of Commerce:

WASHINGTON — President Obama filled out his economic team on Thursday, nominating a long-time supporter and a top aide for the jobs of Commerce secretary and U.S. trade representative.

Obama picked Chicago business executive and political fundraiser Penny Pritzker for Commerce secretary and economic adviser Mike Froman for trade representative.

Describing both nominees as friends, Obama said Pritzker and Froman would work on what he called his top priorities: “To grow the economy, create good middle-class jobs (and) make sure that the next generation prospers.”

Obama played up Pritzker’s ties to the business community — a group that has been critical of his administration — but her nomination could face trouble over criticism from unions and her family’s ties to a failed bank.

If confirmed, Ms. Pritzker will be the richest Commerce Secretary in U. S. history. She’s #271 in Forbes list of richest Americans. Ten members of the Pritzker family are billionaires. Yet more evidence that the Republican Party is the party of the 1% while the Democratic Party is the party of, well…never mind.

I have no opinion on Ms. Pritzker’s business acumen or her ability to fulfill the job of Secretary of Commerce. The pragmatics of her appointment may be fine but the atmospherics stink. This administration has too many fundraisers, bundlers, and cronies. That may be true of every administration but that’s hardly a recommendation.

That was a good one, and makes me laugh.

Reynolds will have a heart attack, but I know a good doc…….steve.

I have no opinion right now. Don’t know her, although it was a Pritzker exec who taught what amounted to Chicago’s private equity course. Soft spot in my heart. I just want someone in there with a clue. The current gang………..oy.

He tries to be bipartisan and you criticize it.

  • I presume you’re joshing, steve. Penny Pritzker is a high-powered Democrat and big-time Democratic contributor and fund-raiser.

Yes. But it seems clear both parties agree that the wealthy should run the country.

  • Not something with which I agree but it’s pretty clear that my fellow Americans disagree with me on this subject.

Worth mentioning. Ms. Pritzker made her money the old-fashioned way: she inherited it.

Tee-he-he. Yes, a member of the lucky sperm club. I know 100 of them. However, it does not follow that we, as a society, have the right to to take their property away. If we go that route the country is finished.

And steve..there is nothing that says the rich should run the freakin’ place. Last time I looked you could go into a voting booth and make your own decisions. The fact that those decidions might be just an absolute mess is worthy of discussion, but right now, people have their own right to vote.
