Yesterday my nephew, Neal, graduated from medical school. Somewhat to his surprise he also received the school’s award for achievement in clinical neurology. He has a couple of weeks to get himself settled before he begins his internship. Congratulations, Neal!

Today my youngest nephew, Eric, graduated from college. Congratulations, Eric!

Both of them are smart, good-looking, industrious young men. I have no doubts they’ll prosper even in today’s very uncertain economic circumstances.

It occurred to me that as of today there will be no one in my family in school for the first time in twenty years or so. If you discount a brief hiatus in the 1980s, it will be the first time no one in my family has been in school over a period of a half century of more.

If you include Neal’s fiancée, we do have someone in the family who’s still in school. She’s studying to be a veterinarian.

So, time for you to head back to school? I’m sure any professor would be just thrilled to have you. They love being vigorously cross-examined.

  • Last year I considered it and I’m still thinking about doing some online coursework. Going back to school and getting another post-graduate degree is just prohibitively expensive. If I were a person of independent means, perhaps. But it’s too expensive for a hobby.
