Paczki Day

Today is Shrove Tuesday, Mardi Gras, Carnival, Pancake Tuesday, or, as we say here in Chicago, Paczki Day. Paczki (pronounced, roughly, “punch-key”—the vowel is a nasalized schwa), pictured above, are Polish filled doughnuts. You can get pretty good paczki at the Alliance Bakery in Wicker Park or at my local Polish bakery, the Gladstone Park Bakery.

You might enjoy a video report from ABC 7 Chicago on the pronunciation, production, and tradition of paczki.
