My Own Selective Outrage

I am not outraged that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi demanded and received a lot of military flights. Congressional representatives are very powerful government officials, the Speaker of the House is among the most powerful of Congressional representatives, and rank doth have its privileges. However, I am outraged that she isn’t compelled to report the value of the service as income.

For you, me, or the chairman of General Electric commuting back and forth from home to office isn’t a deductible expense and I see no reason that it should be for Congressional representatives, either.

I agree. Ideally, Congress should buy themselves (or charter) a few planes – why do they need military aircraft at all? Tax liability is probably a big reason.

  • Apparently it’s a post 9/11 thing. The Speaker is in the line of succession so it’s a security issue.

The Judicial Watch story is apparently largely false: http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/Story?id=7057198&page=2
