My Dad’s Birthday, 2007

Fred Schuler in Scotland, c. 1938

Today is my dad’s birthday. I had planned on posting part of the journal that he kept of his year-long trip to Europe while Europe was on the brink of war in 1938 but events have prevented me from getting it ready in time. Some of it has general interest for historical, cultural, and just anecdotal reasons.

In the picture above he’s posing with a Christmas tree, I believe in Scotland. He’s been gone almost 40 years now. I still miss him, his sound judgment, and his good heart. As I’ve said before, he was the smartest, wisest, best man I’ve ever known.
