Learning About Learning

There’s a Jesuit maxim: “Give me the child until he is seven and I’ll show you the man.” That’s probably why, despite the weak empirical evidence for many educational practices, they’re defended with such fervor. Here’s an interesting article on what we’re learning about learning. Many common beliefs are either unsupported with empirical evidence or just plain wrong.

I suspect that there are some people who will learn despite the method, many people who learn according to traditional methods (it’s why they became traditional methods), and some people who have difficulty learning regardless of the method. Maybe the more interesting question is what is the objective of formal education?
