This is Independence Day,
Fourth of July, the day we mean to keep,
Whatever happens and whatever falls
Out of a sky grown strange;
This is firecracker day for sunburnt kids,
The day of the parade,
Slambanging down the street.
Listen to the parade!

You can listen to the entirety of the original Cavalcade of America broadcast from 1943 of Stephen Vincent Benet’s Listen to the People here. Chicago Boyz links to its Life Magazine appearance. The work was intended to be performed aloud rather than read so listen!

Check out Clarissa Pinkola Estés’s post of an old soldier’s Fourth of July reflections.

Gerard Vanderleun has a Fourth of July concert of YouTube videos. Special appearance by cowboy poet Baxter Black.

How to carve a watermelon submarine. Hat tip: Dr. B. who has aggregated a number of good links (and videos!) on the subject of watermelon carving.

I’ll add to this as I find appropriate links.
