Johnny One-Note

For anyone who questions my assessment of the narrow range of topics being entertained by the major media outets’ opinion pages, consider the Washington Post today. Of the first 14 pieces on the front page, seven are anti-Trump, one pro-Trump, one (George Will’s) remarks on immigration (regulating immigration is hard), two are anti-Russia, one is about sexual abuse among Catholic clerics, and one is about DC schools.

We already know that the WP’s editorial position is against Trump. I’m not particularly fond of him myself. Unless you’ve got something new and substantive to say, move on. He will be president for at least another three years. There are many, many other topics.

On Thursday afternoon, a local radio talk show host warned everyone not to listen/watch the news for the next 48 hours. My interest was piqued so I waited to hear the reason, and once I heard the word Stormy, in part because my son was in the car, but I haven’t paid attention to the news since. It was a statement against interest, right? So it had to be true.

It’s the Washington bubble. – they can’t help their own lack of vision.

I’m not so sure “There are many, many other topics.”

Suppose for instance, you took offense at something the Interior Department did a few years back — jacking up entry fees for National Parks, overcharging ranchers for grazing rights, etc. You could reasonably write an editorial to criticize that policy and maybe the Secretary of the Interior, and maybe it’d catch some attention. It might turn into a Meet The Press topic; maybe other newspapers would notice your editorial and write similar ones.

But today, who would notice? Everybody’s watching Trump, waiting on his tweets, wondering what the next rumors will be. Nobody pays much attention to Cabinet officers and their actions. Maybe there’s a post at Poliitico or Vox, but there’s not much follow ip, it’s just wasted effort.
