Is Our Problem the Authoritarian Right?

I thought you might find this post by James A. Gardner at RealClearPolicy interesting:

The great and wholly unforeseen political disaster of our times, however, is that the United States no longer has two parties committed to liberalism. The Democratic Party retains its historical commitment to liberal democracy. The Republican Party, on the other hand, has become something else entirely: It has become a party of illiberalism and authoritarianism. Its leaders no longer profess the basic equality of all Americans. They oppose popular sovereignty anywhere that its exercise results in the elevation to office of Democrats. They seek to undermine the rule of law, adhering instead to the maxim followed by dictators everywhere: “for my friends, everything; for my enemies, the law.”

I think I see things a little differently. I think that we have a completely foreseeable political disaster caused by neither party retaining any particular commitment to liberal democracy, joined by their common determination to acquire and retain power by any means necessary.

Mr. Gardner appears to have been sound asleep the last 5 years. Or perhaps was writing while on his second bottle of Jack.

He laments a common commitment to liberalism, stakes out the moral high ground for for his party, and then stoops to “toady” for the opposition he claims to want common ground with.
    Why?
Because its all a lie and that slip is proof.

Both sides do it? Sorry, only one party is holding fake investigations of elections. Only one party invaded the capital.

  • Both sides gerrymander and, as 538 has documented, the Democrats benefit from it more than do the Republicans. Only the Republicans lost a presidential election in 2020. Of course they’re upset about it. That they’re upset does not prove authoritarianism. They thought they were entitled to the presidency. They were wrong.

My own view is that anarcho-capitalists on the right and Sovietophiles on the left are much worse problems than rightwing authoritarians.

And only one party held fake investigations against a sitting President based on false documents purchased by the previous losing candidate HR Clinton. This is what we’ve come to now, the gloves are off, every play gets reviewed, time and time again.
The power of the Federal government is such that losing that is not an option for either party.

“And only one party held fake investigations against a sitting President”

Actually the GOP held multiple fake investigations including 8 on Benghazi. Given that Mueller found Trump actually ordered illegal stuff but his staff didnt carry it out there was a lot more found than in the 8 Benghazi tries.

” Of course they’re upset about it. That they’re upset does not prove authoritarianism. ”

Totally agree. Being upset is normal. Having investigations of the vote done by auditors with no experience who dont understand the voting process and making false claims about the elections to discredit them is obviously a big problem. They have their voters convinced that they never actually lose an election but that millions of people are fraudulently voting and that is why they lose. The reality is that they keep winning the POTUS elections despite having millions fewer votes. Those are the electoral rules but the inability to accept losing and trying to actively subvert elections when you lose by millions is concerning.

Nothing could be done. Obama was napping. Any military commander who wanted to come to their aid was relieved of command.
And did I mention Obama was resting up for a fundraiser and left orders not to be disturbed?
