How to Lie With Statistics (Part n)

If I haven’t made things clear in my previous post, precisely the same approach that people are using to calculate the low risk of terrorist attack on commercial airlines can be used to argue against laws, any law enforcement at all, traffic lights, or any other approach that people use to mitigate risk. If judged by crimes per person-hour, using a police force to address crime is a ridiculous overreaction.

I don’t conclude from this that we shouldn’t have laws, traffic lights, police forces, fire departments, and so on. I conclude that the tools used to draw the conclusion are unsuitable to the task.
