Handicapping the Illinois Governor’s Race

It’s just three weeks until the general election and I honestly don’t know who will prevail in the Illinois governor’s race, the incumbent Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn or the challenger, wealthy Republican businessman Bruce Rauner.

On the one hand I don’t see how the same policies that have dug Illinois into the hole in which we now find ourselves will eventually succeed if we just persist at them long enough. On the other hand Rauner’s proposals consist largely of Underpants Gnome schemes and the reality is that his campaign is predicated on his not being Pat Quinn.

I think whatever happens it will be close and it will be largely dependent on turnout. If Cook County doesn’t turn out for Quinn, he’s in trouble. My guess is that there will be record-breaking low turnout just as there was in the primaries.

  • In Florida, I just know that whether Scott or Crist wins, we would have probably been off if Florida Man had won.

I’ve now participated in four robo-call polls on this election, two turned out to be push polls, and the other two appear to be straight. As of today, I would vote for the Rauner:

1st Poll: Straight. Most interesting question was who do I think is the reform candidate (D, R, Both or Neither), and it felt odd to say that Quinn was not a reform candidate, someone who has sought that identity for all of his career.

2nd Poll: Push. Longest poll, and didn’t realize it was a push poll until I was asked whether Quinn’s continuing support for the Madigan-Quinn tax hikes impacted my views. “Madigan” is not a neutral word here.

3rd Poll: Push. This poll appeared to push the Libertarian candidate, which leaves me wondering whether it was from the Libertarians or the Democrats. I learned that the Libertarian is pro-life, and in fact all of his positions appear to be to the right of the Republican.

4th Poll: Straight. Three questions: who will I vote for (R), do you have a favorable opinion of the Democratic candidate (no), the Republican candidate (no).

I think the Republican wins basically because the 2010 election was so close, and I think the concerted effort to move away from social issues this election cycle will overcome that gap. Most other factors are the same or worse for Democrats this time around.

Pat Quinn’s ads say Bruce Rauner fleeced companies while loading them up with debt and killed nursing home patients.

What a bad man. I’d better vote for Quinn.

  • Drew, I got back-to-back ads fromCrist & Scott during MNF calling each other liars. I didn’t even get an erectile function ad in between to, uh, liven things, uh, up.

Is the election over yet? And why can’t they leave _ME_ alone – I’m not even voting this time!
