Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn’s amendatory veto of concealed carry legislation for Illinois has been overriden by both houses of the Illinois legislature:
SPRINGFIELD-Illinois joined 49 other states Tuesday by approving legislation allowing gun owners to carry their weapons in public places, overriding Gov. Pat Quinn and dealing the governor a resounding defeat.
The Senate put the finishing touches on the override push, voting 41-17 to reject a series of changes Quinn had recommended to the concealed-carry legislation that passed in May. The Senate’s action followed a 77-31 vote by the House earlier Tuesday.
This move has been necessitated by a federal appeals court’s decision back in December that Illinois’s strict ban on gunowners’ carrying their firearms in public was unconstitutional.
Despite extensive lobbying by the governor the vote wasn’t even close and, honestly, he only persuaded a handful of members of the Illinois House.
As I see it, Quinn pulled a Blagojevich. He hid while divisive legislation was being debated in the legislature, offering no input or influence on the process. When it was over he called a self-serving press conference to demagogue the legislators, lie about the bill (which prohibits concealed carry in bars), cast aspersions at a Madigan, and try to throw out difficult compromise legislation to advance his own political agenda, which its getting harder for most of us to understand. Right now, I am going with Quinn needs to get Lisa Madigan in the race to create a strong three-way race, where the Madigans can be made the issue.
