The Cherry Blossom Festival has started in Washington, DC. The picture above is of the cherries blooming, framing the Washington Monument.
It’s worth mentioning that next year will be the centennial of the arrival of the cherry trees in Washington. About 2,000 trees were gifts from the city of Tokyo to Washington. After a false start the planting of the trees got underway a century ago next year.
One year, back in the 1990s, I was in Japan during their Cherry Blossom Festival. The trees were beautiful.
Fascinating; I’ve been on the mall and didn’t notice the trees, though I’m sure they are beautiful now. What a wondrous gift and piece of Japan.
I’m sitting here with watery eyes and a dripping nose (don’t forget the intermittent sneezes) due to seasonal allergies. Somehow the sight of blossoming trees spewing out tons of pollen doesn’t cheer my heart.
Show me the photo again in a month. I’ll undoubtedly appreciate it more then.
