We were awakened this morning by the sound of helicopters and sirens:
January 20, 2006 – Emergency crews battled an extra-alarm fire on the city’s Northwest Side near Cicero and Peterson. A water main break in the area hampered their effort, firefighters said.
Officials said one firefighter suffered a minor injury while battling the blaze, which broke out around 5 a.m. at the Bread Basket Restaurant. The fire then spread to other businesses in the one-story building.
Police have closed roads in the area, including Cicero and Peterson. The eastbound exit ramps to the Eden are closed, causing a backup on the highway. Also, the CTA has rerouted some buses.
That’s about two blocks from us.
This is a crying shame. The Bread Basket was a darned nice place and the lady who ran it was great. I doubt that they’ll rebuild storefronts in this location. My guess: condos.
