From the Department of “Things You Don’t Say Whether They’re True or Not”

Geraldo Rivera, combining fashion and self-defense advice:

Geraldo Rivera said Friday he would “bet money” that Trayvon Martin wouldn’t have been fatally shot if the teenager hadn’t been wearing a hoodie, and the Fox News host’s comments immediately drew a fierce response, with one critic branding him a “moron” on Twitter.

“I am urging the parents of black and Latino youngsters particularly to not let their children go out wearing hoodies,” Rivera said on “Fox & Friends.” “I think the hoodie is as much responsible for Trayvon Martin’s death as George Zimmerman was.”

It seems to me that there’s a fortune to be made selling a special “Geraldo Rivera” model of this.

But if what Geraldo says is true, then why shouldn’t he say it? I know I tense up when I see black youths wearing hoodies. I took an informal survey at work today and got the same response from 4 other people. So why can’t this be discussed? Because crime statistics involving black people might enter the discussion? Because that topic is also verboten?
Because, God forbid, someone might become offended?

Why can’t we talk about these things?
