Free Riders Wanna Ride Free

Canada, Britain, France, Germany, and people in the United States who are prospering can’t get their heads around the idea that a lot of Americans don’t think we’re getting enough from the deal that we’ve cut with the rest of the major economies where they sell and we buy. We pay for a large standing army and they don’t. The demand for the dollar means that we have an absurdly large financial economy relative to the rest of the economy and they don’t.

    Is that an external or an internal problem? Seems pretty clear that a few people are making a lot of money out of it. Is the fact that the benefits are not more evenly shared due to problems with Canada etc?

    Just slightly OT, I haven’t followed, as an example, the dairy issue in detail, but if Canada has tariffs on our dairy, as I recall we provide pretty large subsidies for the dairy industry. I am not sure we have really good assessments on all of these trade “imbalances”.

    President Trump proposed removing all tariffs and subsidies. I am astonished that the other countries did not find this acceptable.

    I don’t remember seeing any specifics about the moving subsidies, just a throwaway line somewhere. If he came with a plan that said “we will remove these subsidies and remove our own tariffs, if you drop these specific tariffs and your subsidies”, then I think Trump has a point. However I doubt Trump was that well prepared.

    Uhh, moving should not be in first sentence.

    @steve

    Whether President Trump has a proposal is irrelevant. Any one of the G-6 leaders could have inquired, but of course, they did not. The only tariffs they oppose is the reciprocal ones against.

    In any case, you can defend them all you want, but they are on the wrong side of history.
