When I got out of my car after parking in the grocery store lot, I spotted a cellphone on the ground. I examined it and, strangely, it had a message and a signature written on it. The message was “Look at the flowers” and I couldn’t make out the signature.

I figured someone would miss it and I couldn’t just leave it there so I trotted into the store and got into line at the customer service desk where two women with strong accents (different accents) were arguing with each other. When I got up to the desk, I turned in the phone and explained the situation.

As I turned to walk away, a young girl (keep in mind that any female below the age of forty looks like a young girl to me) in a state of distress came up to the desk, spied the phone in the customer service representative’s hand, and said “That’s my phone! That’s my phone! It has an autograph from someone in The Walking Dead on it!” She was able to repeat the message and easily unlocked the phone. She thanked the customer service representative who pointed to me. So she thanked me.

On reflection I think the autograph was probably Melissa MacBride’s. Didn’t she say the line “Look at the flowers” to a young girl in one of the episodes?

Hmmm, that story went from community affirming to a bit creepy. I like it.

For those who don’t watch, the reference is to a scene where a twelve-year old girl is shot in the back of the head, George-and-Lennie style, by being asked to look at the flowers. She had killed her younger sister and was psychotic and too dangerous to be around people in this post-apocalyptic world.
