For Jimmy Stewart Fans

In the decade of the 1950s James Stewart made 22 major motion pictures. From September 1953 to June 1954 he also performed in The Six Shooter, a western, on radio. There were 40 half hour episodes of The Six Shooter in all, for a total of 20 hours—that’s the equivalent 10 full length motion pictures or just about a third of Stewart’s extant output for the decade.

The Six Shooter is folksy, humorous, action-packed, moving, and perfectly suited for James Stewart.

If you’re a fan of Stewart’s you owe it to yourself to listen to at least one of the episodes of The Six Shooter. The entire run is available here. Stewart is a good radio actor and the series feature many of the regular Los Angeles-based radio actors including William Conrad, Virginia Gregg, Howard McNear, Parley Baer, Harry Bartell, Jeanette Nolan, and Dan O’Herlihy. All of the shows were directed by Jack Johnstone, best known for Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar, and written by Frank Burt who also wrote the motion picture The Man From Laramie for Stewart.

Have been watching Ken Burns Country Music series. They go into the history of radio as bit as a byproduct. The bit about border busters was pretty interesting. Also learned that WLS stood for World’s Largest Store.
