Election Notes

It’s possible that Chicago’s turnout will be below the turnout for the 2010 midterm elections In 2010 the turnout was 36.9%. As of 6:00pm, just an hour before the polls closed, turnout was 33.5%. I’m surprised it was that high.

Dick Durbin is being projected as winning his re-election bid which is completely unsurprising.

  • I assume you didn’t work the polling station today because of the new gig?

    They’re calling the gubernatorial race for Scott. Sadly, Florida Man was going to win no matter what.

  • That’s right. First general election I haven’t worked in 24 years.

    Being a working man is a bitch, isn’t it? LOL

    Looks like the Republicans will take the Senate, with more seats likely to come. Surprised that VA is as close as it is, though it seems likely to remain blue.

    More local Florida stuff: Four Central Florida state House seats that went Democratic in 2012 went Republican in 2014. Orange County slowly gets bluer, though the Republicans continue to dominate the County Commission because of better organization, mid-term elections, and officially non-partisan elections. It seems that turnout has been up over 2010, especially in red counties. They really REALLY didn’t want Crist to win another term. Frankly, I’m baffled that anyone did, other than Charlie and his beard and his boss.

    And most importantly, Bowling Green leads Akron 20-10 in college football. Normally I am opposed to the nonsense of football on a Tuesday, but every couple of years it provides a nice tonic. So let’s go, Zips, and get back into the game!

    Till is just climbed a mountain.

    With LA and AK you could see 54. Not sure though that given some razor thin margins it’s a “wave.” OTOH with Govs

    wait. They just called for Rauner. There is a god.

    To finish.

    And with 10 House seats it’s awfully close to a wave.

    Biggest disappointment of the night: Al Franken wins. My god, Al again?

    Come on, Drew, at least Carterism got beat back in GA, that’s got to count for something!

    Listening to Mitch McConnell talk about being the agent of “real change in Washington” is another hoot. Who does he think he’s kidding?

    Still happy I didn’t vote. What relief I have that Crist lost is badly disturbed by the thought of four more years of a crook who bought the office with ill-gotten gains as Governor. Ugh. What the Hell happened to the days of guys like Askew, Graham and Bush as governor? Hell, even Bob Martinez was better than these two jokers.

    One last thing, and then I’m off to see how Sharpe gets through the battle of Waterloo:

    Twice in the last week people in the White House have complained about other people being chickenshit. And twice those people in the White House have made their complaints anonymously. I do not think that word means what they think it means.

    Hey, Ted Cruz is sounding somewhat sane! He’s saying, “That the fact that the people rose up and voted the Democrats out of power doesn’t mean they trust the Republicans; they’ve given us another chance….” We’ll see if they’re really up to the challenge. I doubt that, but at least one of them is acknowledging that the Dems lost at least as much as the Reps won.

    Which reminds me of what I said back in 2006 and 2008: The Dems didn’t deserve to win, but the Republicans sure as Hell deserved to lose. Similarly in 2010 I said the Republicans didn’t deserve to win, but the Dems deserved to lose. The same is true tonight, though really both sides deserved to lose.

    You know, I used to laugh at Al Franken as a Senator too, but to be honest, he seems to take the job more seriously than most, even if I don’t agree with many of his positions.

    In Florida, Crist lost – Yay! Scott won – Boo! And “medical” Mary Jane won – yay I guess? As my 10yo daughter said tonight, “Daddy, I’m really glad this election is over so I don’t have to listen to any more stupid commercials.” Everyone wins on that score….

    Medical marijuana lost in Florida. It needed 60% approval.

    Oh, that’s right, thanks.

    Partly inspired by icepick’s negativity, I enjoyed voting against almost every incumbent on the ballot, and voted against every referendum and question on the ballot, and skipping unopposed candidates. Probably irresponsibly so, since I don’t know much about a couple of the lambs offered up to popular incumbents. I may have cast my first vote for a hollow-earther.

    To seek it with thimbles, to seek it with care;
    To pursue it with forks and hope;
    To threaten its life with a railway-share;
    To charm it with smiles and soap!

    Lewis Carroll has provided the blueprint. He even addressed Florida specifically:

    Then the bowsprit got mixed with the rudder sometimes:
    A thing, as the Bellman remarked,
    That frequently happens in tropical climes,
    When a vessel is, so to speak, “snarked.”

    Not voting is voting for the winner, but the winner is going to screw you anyway. When given a Sophie’s Choice, the winning move is no move.

  • Guarneri Link

    Heh. I voted for one Democrat – Jesse White, and bailed out to one Libertarian because I couldn’t stomach Topinka.

    Next up. Making Reynolds miserable.

    I know. Petty, but entertaining.

    Gov. Quinn won’t concede. About 130 precincts left, albeit in Democratic rich areas like Chicago, but my calculations show that Quinn would need everybody left to vote three times for him to catch-up.

    @Drew

    … Petty, …

    Why? Hubris deserves a kick in the teeth. Live by the sword. Die by the sword.

    I guess the magnificence of The One resides only now with MR and a few others at OTB.

    Oh, and you are all racists.

    OTB has the usual story: mean Republicans beating up good-hearted, incompetent Democrats. I’ve been telling any liberal who would listen that ignoring the economy was a bad idea but the response is always “The economy is recovering and stocks are up!” It’s pretty obvious liberals are so far out of touch they can’t even see a person with an income less that 90k.

  • Ben, if I didn’t and haven’t made it clear, I was livid when the Obama Administration turned away from the economy and towards healthcare. I’ve thought of writing a post titled “Bright Shiny Objects”. Like all administrations this one finds it hard to walk and chew gum at the same time but this administration declares victory after the first battle and moves on to the next issue.

  • Ben Wolf Link

    Yes, I think that’s a good way of putting it. Battles are fought to take advantage of the news cycle and then dropped. When a problem comes up, more PR spin. The only thing I’m certain we can draw from these election results is that voters wanted Democrats to know “jaw, jaw, jaw” on such issues while doing the opposite isn’t good enough.

  • Andy Link

    My attitude was similar to PD’s. I voted against incumbents (but not Crist) except for a couple of local positions.

  • PD, glad my unrelenting negativity could be of help!
