Death of the Old

Without dwelling on it too much, I think it’s worth considering that what’s going on right now in the incipient conflict between Iran and Saudi Arabia and maybe in the whole Middle East is a consequence of generational change among the Saudi leadership. There is an enormous gulf between the older generation of leaders who, quite literally, grew up in tents in the desert and the younger generation who have had a mostly urban life experience.

Note, too, that the present Iranian leadership is still composed of old revolutionaries. There will be substantial change when they’re replaced by a younger generation who don’t remember anything but the rule of the mullahs.

At least from the US perspective, the Wahhabi influence (leading to fundamentalism, radicalism, terrorism) has been around for quite a while. It is not really my sense that the younger generation is any more virulent than the older, though perhaps they may need to prove their bona fides by being more belligerent.
