Count Your Blessings

Today is the day we’ve set aside to remember our mothers. Be grateful if your mother remembers you. Not everyone has that privilege.

Do you think it wise to celebrate a day for mothers? After what they’ve done?

I went over to visit my Mom today. She’s bed-ridden, but still very sharp. We don’t really have a “milk and cookies” kind of relationship — at least the version I always wanted. But, I respect her, and honor her endurance. And, I think of my long-ago deceased dad when I’m with her, who held my heart, passing on way too soon for our relationship to bloom into my adulthood.

However, time moves on, and we cultivate other loves of our lives, my husband and son being two important ones. And, they were present tonight for a spontaneous pizza celebration. A special memory was created because it was the first time our son brought flowers and a crooked smile to dinner. It’s an embossed mental picture which will last forever.

  • I don’t know that I’d characterize my relationship with my late mother as “milk and cookies”. It was more inspiring, empowering, and energizing. With the exception of my dear wife, the best friend I’ll ever have.

    Dave,

I don’t know if it’s true of most people, but I got along better with one parent than the other — my dad. I was his ‘little girl,’ so to speak, and we did everything together — hikes, fishing, debating, talking out problems, joking. He was not only my dad but a treasured friend. Even though I was barely out of my teens before he was gone, I was aware of his importance in my life. I couldn’t nor did I do any of the above things with my Mom.

jan, if you don’t curse your mother’s name reflexively, count it as a win.
