Catching my eye: morning A through Z

Despite the fact that I’m not much interested in Plamegate or whether Harriet Miers is a true believer there are a few things that have caught my eye this morning:

  • Abode of Amritas is skeptical of Chinese language education in the United States and correctly points out that Chinese isn’t a language but is a family of mutually indistinguishable languages. He also wonders how many Chinese people really speak Mandarin (the “dialect”, i.e. member of the language family, generally learned here).
  • This post from Armchair Generalist on bioterror is pretty interesting. He knows what he’s talking about so it’s worth a look.
  • LawGeek points out another example of modern copyright idiocy: Fox has moved to stop a fan performance of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer musical episode “Once More With Feeling”. What bugs me the most about this is that Buffy itself is obviously derived from a Japanese cartoon.
  • Coyote Blog brings up a point that I’ve considered myself: Democrats should be careful what they wish for. If Dick Cheney (who’s vowed not to run for president in 2008 and whose health makes it unlikely, anyway) were to leave the Vice Presidency, his replacement would immediately be a contender for the nomination in 2008. UPDATE: Further musings along similar lines from media girl.
  • More evidence that Muslims are condemning the terrorists. Crossroads Arabia points to an article by a Saudi columnist that does just that.

That’s the lot.
