Buy on the Rumor; Sell on the News

If Rasmussen’s daily presidential approval tracking poll is any gauge, there is no notable upswing in presidential approval as a consequence of the president’s immigration announcement last night. Rather, more along the lines that I predicted, what happened was a very mild uptick before the announcement and a return to trend afterward.

Much as I predicted. I wonder if those who predicted a 5 point improvement in the president’s approval rating after the announcement will feel chastened. I’m guessing not.

I didn’t expect any uptick, any tick at all, to tell the truth. I suspect this brouhahatito will subside in the body politic within a couple of weeks, if not days. OTOH, I predict a major downtick for the Republicans as the Speaker and the Senate Majority Leader To Be fail miserably in their attempt to herd a bunch of feral cats.

The truth is: you may buy high, sell low or buy low, sell high, or buy on rumor, sell on the news, buy on the full moon, sell on the new moon, or use “dollar-cost averaging.” They are a few of the many strategies that yield totally equivalent results. Program your spreadsheet to show you the truth.

Sorry but I can’t resist. There is a certain commenter at OTB and formerly frequently here who predicted five points.

As they say, frequently wrong but never in doubt.

I see this as more of a political gambit, rather than a well thought out, coherent, collaborative, long term plan to address the plight of illegal immigrants in this country, as well as dishonoring the diligence of those legally going through the hoops to get their green cards, citizenship etc. It pits illegal and legal people against each other, dem against republican, black versus brown. However, divisiveness seems to be this president’s energy drink, as he uses it at will, contemptuous of those who disagree with him.

Alienating people to get what you want, IMO, is poor policy and is just not the way to judiciously govern.
