All Roads Are Local

I have only one thing to say about Michelle Nellenbach’s complaint at Roll Call that “our roads…are falling apart”.

The federal government’s involvement in building roads is almost entirely in building new roads. Once built they are completely the responsibility of state and local government which continue to own them. That is something that is obvious to anyone who has ever driven from Illinois into Iowa.

I would add that if your dream is for someone else to pay for the road you use to commute to work, it will remain a dream. State and local governments are the entities best situated to identify and fund infrastructure priorities.
