A week before election day

It’s a week before municipal elections in Chicago and you’d scarcely know that there were going to be elections at all.  Mayor Daley is seeking a sixth term and there’s little doubt that he’ll get it.  Marge Laurino, my alderman and the daughter of the previous incumbent, is seeking re-election, too, and there’s little doubt of her re-election, either.

I only received my notification that I was serving as a judge of election this time around by asking for it.  There will only be three judges serving at the polling place to which I’ve been assigned which is barely enough to do the job.  The minimum is two—one Democrat and one Republican; practically speaking you really need four.  Despite the low turnout I expect I’m sure we’ll be busy, at least in fits and starts.
