A Tale of Two Job Approvals

Here’s Richard Nixon’s job approval rating for his second term of office:

and here’s Donald Trump’s:

As I’ve been saying for some time, if you have visions of Trump being driven from office as Nixon was, you’re fantasizing. His approval rating would have to drop a lot.

At this point would any revelation cause his supporters to abandon him? I think that anything would either be ignored, be proclaimed “fake news”, or dismissed as partisan.

What a world, what a world.

The democrat resistance/obstruction tactics have hog-tied this president’s administrative capacity at every turn – from the moment he was the republican nominee to the present. With 90% of negative news, to digging up sordid episodes happening over a decade ago, I personally think a cloud of fatigue will settle over this country resulting in a “what’s the point” attitude.

Also, none of the political haggling seems to be spurred by motives of doing what is best for the country. Instead, it’s all about gaining political advantage over the current party in power. So, screw filling out important administration positions. Marinate the public in speculative gossip. Mire us in an endless search by Mueller for something, anything, to pin on Trump, and render him impotent. I wonder, though, will this kind of vigorous, hateful push back become
precendent-setting for the next president, no matter which political party is in the oval office?

Agreed. There is nothing that his supporters will desert him over. He has not been able to accomplish much, but the same Republicans who claimed Obama could not work with he opposition are now blaming the Democrats. For sure, there is a modicum of truth there, but Trump hasn’t even been able to lead his own party very effectively. So, while I think it likely some bad stuff comes out as they investigate Cohen, there will not be an impeachment and when he runs for office again the GOP will vote for him, no matter he has done or doesn’t accomplish.

As an aside, it is a bit much to hear the people who investigated Clinton and did 8 investigations on Benghazi complaining about Mueller, who already has indicted or obtained guilty pleas on 5(?) people.

  • Not only that but bizarre as it seems Trump is the favorite going into 2020. That’s structural.

“anything would either be ignored, be proclaimed “fake news”, or dismissed as partisan.” By the hicks residing in that basket of deplorables. What if there is no “smoking gun”? What if Trump is what he seems to be? A ruthless but lawful businessman? A horn dog when it comes to women, we’ve had that before.
Another question. What if Mueller wrings false testimony under duress from Trump’s lawyer and trump is driven from office? Mission accomplished? Will 41% of Americans throw up their hands and say well, that’s the way it goes?

Yes, 2020. You might want to google ” Joe Biden being creepy”. picked that up from my millennial son, great videos. Biden can’t make it.

  • Others who probably can’t win: Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders. As the late Mayor Daley once said, no matter how it looks now somebody will win the election.

  • Trump hasn’t even been able to lead his own party very effectively

Which party was that? He defeated 18 Republican opponents in securing the nomination—basically representing the entire party. He’s the anti-Republican Republican. He had practically no history with the party and no allies.

Angelo Codevilla pretty much nailed the current situation back in 2010:

He asserts that the major political division in the US is not Republicans vs. Democrats but rather the Ruling Class vs. the Country Class. The exemplars are Sarah Palin, the Tea Party and Donald Trump.

I think there is a real chance for impeachment should the Democrats do well in the House and there is something that sticks to Trump from the various investigations. Two big ifs at this point.

    Heh. Things will change.

So now Rosenstein says Trump not a target in the Cohen matter. Sorry, steve. McCabe and Comey busy throwing each other under the bus. Comey behaving like a fool. And McCabe referred by IG. Next up, Loretta Lynch. And Mueller indicting side characters. What ever happened to Russian collusion?

What a long strange trip its been, and will be.
