Eye on the Watcher’s Council

As you may know the members of the Watcher’s Council each nominate one of his or her own posts and one non-Council post for consideration by the whole Council. The complete list of this week’s Council nominations is here.

With the sad departure of Done With Mirrors from the Watcher’s Council there’s a spot available. If you have a blog of your own, please consider applying for a position. If you’ve applied before try again. The rules and responsibilities are here.

Rhymes With Right, “In The Aftermath Of Ike – The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly”

Greg reflects on how Houston has fared in the aftermath of Hurricane Ike. One comment on the incident that Greg characterizes as “the ugly”: there is a certain school of thought that if somebody is dumb enough to leave a $20 bill on a table unattended that you owe it to him and yourself to take it, particularly if he can afford it. It will teach him a valuable lesson. As long as the proportion of people who think that way is small, we’ll get by but if it becomes a substantial part of the population (which I fear it is) I don’t honestly see how we can endure as a free society.

Joshuapundit, “The Crap Sandwich”

Freedom Fighter comments on the plan to rescue the financial system that’s making its way through Congress, the one defeated in the House in particular. I think he’s mischaracterizing the bill and doesn’t adequately appreciate the downside risk or its likelihood.

Wolf Howling, “A Doddering Fool”

GW isn’t happy about Connecticut Sen. Chris Dodd’s role both in fomenting the present financial crisis and in resolving it.

Bookworm Room, “When God closes a door, he sometimes opens a window”

Bookworm comments on infanticide, eugenics, and euthanasia. I can’t help but think that many of those that she thinks of as “the Left” believe much as she does on this subject.

The Colossus of Rhodey, “I thought the Left wanted to talk about issues?”

Issues, gotchas, manufactured scandals, whatever.

Hillbilly White Trash, “The little messiah unleashes his freikorps”

Lemuel Calhoon takes exception with the threats of legal action aimed at shutting down political discourse in Missouri. I agree that this is shameful. I know that politics ain’t beanbag but if it becomes total war I don’t see how the Republic can survive. There must be limits and one of those limits is that political speech must be tolerated. That includes speech with which you disagree, even outright lies. The remedy for lies in political speech is the truth, not arrests or law suits.

The Glittering Eye, “System Failure”

In my submission this week I speculate on some of the underlying systemic issues behind the financial crisis. I think there’s more than just a few bad actors or a little tweaking of regulation that’s needed.

Soccer Dad, “McCain’s role”

Soccer Dad takes a look at the presidential politics behind the rescue plan. There’s one thing in the post that I disagree with. I think that Soccer Dad is conflating a free press with an unbiased one. I have little doubt that our press continues to be very free. It’s also rather obviously very biased. While once that might have been a threat to the Republic I’m not so sure it is any more.

Cheat-Seeking Missiles , “McCain’s Needed New Messaging Strategy”

I agree completely with Laer’s analysis of the two candidates’ debate performance last week. However, I’m not quite as much in agreement about how Sen. McCain should revise his campaign message. I think that Sen. McCain needs to tell us why he wants to be president and incorporate that into a positive and upbeat vision of America and its future. That’s what both candidates need to do, really. Historically, the candidate best able to communicate a positive vision of America and its future has been elected president.

Well, I’ve decided which posts I’ll vote for this week. Which posts would get your votes?
