Eye on the Watcher’s Council

As you may know the members of the Watcher’s Council each nominate one of his or her own posts and one non-Council post for consideration by the whole Council. The complete list of this week’s Council nominations is here. The Council plans to continue the present rotation scheme until the arrangements subsequent to the Watcher’s retirement are finalized. Stay tuned! This outing the Council’s weekly submissions are being hosted by Bookworm Room.

The Razor, “Here’s my response to Jack Markell’s commercial”

Scott’s submission this week is a YouTube video submission. I’d wondered when we’d get the first of these and this is it. Nice job, Scott.

Done With Mirrors, “Us and Them”

Callimachus comments on the use of force as one arrow among many in a nation’s quiver.

Wolf Howling, “Stop The Destruction of Our Environment — Drill Now”

GW notes the environmental benefits of offshore drilling.

Soccer Dad, “Hating israel more than loving palestinians”

Soccer Dad fisks a column from Nicholas Kristof. Well of course folks with a certain pattern of thought would hate Israel more than they love the Palestinians. They have no special affection for the Palestinians. It’s just that Israel has been cast in the role of colonial oppressor however poor a job of casting it might be.

Cheat-Seeking Missiles, “An Awful Idea for Renaming a Perfectly Good Mountain”

Laer questions naming a mountain in the Sierra after radical environmentalist David Brower.

The Colossus of Rhodey, “And Phil Gramm got grief? How come?”

Hube wonders about the histrionics over high gas prices.

The Glittering Eye, “Ooh-ooh-ooooh!”

In my submission for this week I give my answer to USA Today’s question, “Why can’t Obama admit the surge worked?”

Rhymes With Right, “Obama Desecrates Holiest Site In Judaism”

Greg is critical of Sen. Obama’s visit to the Wailing Wall. I think it’s darned hard to separate tourism from campaigning when a presidential candidate is making an overseas trip.

Joshua Pundit, ““Ich Bin Ein Beginner!””

Freedom Fighter takes on Sen. Obama’s speech in Berlin last week. Yeah, I thought that quip was pretty funny, too.

Hillbilly White Trash, “China”

Lemuel Calhoon comments on the debt, particularly the canard that we’re borrowing money from the Chinese to finance our deficit. 25% of our public debt is in the hands of foreigners and of that roughly a fifth is held by the Chinese. By my reckoning that comes to about 5% of the debt. It makes a good sound bite, though, and xenophobia looks so much nicer when cloaked in patriotism.

Bookworm Room, “Nobody here but us biased chickens”

Bookworm considers the LA Times’s biases with respect to Sen. Obama.

Well, I’ve decided which posts I’ll vote for this week. Which posts would get your votes?
