Heightened Alert, DHS-Style

It seems to me that this Associated Press story speaks for itself:

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. government has mistakenly granted citizenship to at least 858 immigrants from countries of concern to national security or with high rates of immigration fraud who had pending deportation orders, according to an internal Homeland Security audit released Monday.

The Homeland Security Department’s inspector general found that the immigrants used different names or birthdates to apply for citizenship with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and such discrepancies weren’t caught because their fingerprints were missing from government databases.

The report does not identify any of the immigrants by name, but Inspector General John Roth’s auditors said they were all from “special interest countries” — those that present a national security concern for the United States — or neighboring countries with high rates of immigration fraud. The report did not identify those countries.

The story goes on to quote DHS personnel as blaming old-fashioned paper-based recordkeeping systems. I think I’d look more towards don’t-give-a-damnitude. One of the great things about paper-based systems is that it’s a lot easier to implement compensating controls than it might be with a computer-based system that could take years to develop, modify, and qualify.

Note that the DHS employees who implement these systems are unquestionably civil service employees, have the protections of civil service employees, and are darned hard to fire no matter how badly they screw up. And they know that.

I’D lean toward deliberate, from the top, globalization. Obama’s going to cure Islam by immersion in secular humanisam. Good luck to us all.

All kidding aside, I think its time to combine DHS with another Agency and give everybody step-up raises. Like ordering better compensation for the police of Ferguson, it is a necessary cure. Only when people are paid more do they appreciate the importance of their job. Modest proposal about politicians coming shortly . . .

Also, I feel much better about the vetting of all the additional refugees that our lords and masters want to import from places like Syria, Afghanistan and Somalia now.

And I’d just like to add that Reynolds told us all that Obama would, amongst all the other miraculous things he would do (like racial healing, world peace, immortality for all) would be to herald in a new Age of Competence. Mission accomplished!
