The Council Has Spoken!

The Watcher’s Council has announced its picks for the most outstanding posts of the preceding week. The winning Council post was Gates of Vienna’s post, “Make Them All Welcome”. Only time will tell whether the intellectuals that Dymphna notes who have run afoul of radical Islamism are isolated instances or bellwethers. In second place was my own post, “Assessing the Threat at Our Southern Border”. I’m very gratified at this result and thank the Council members who voted for the post. I actually thought the post was a little dry but it’s an important subject: arriving at an understanding of the appropriate policy with respect to our borders and entry points requires an evaluation of the actual facts and this post was an attempt at presenting them.

The winning non-Council post was the The Anchoress’s post, “The Essential President Bush”. In this excellent post the Anchoress documents the predictability of George Bush’s actions as president. For good or ill I agree: there have been few surprises here. The second place non-Council post was Sigmund, Carl, and Alfred’s, “SC&A Vent” on immigration policy.

You can find a complete list of the results here.

  • Yes, it’s true. Bush is very predictable. And I, too, never once was surprised by him.

  • Yeah, me too. I didn’t vote for him in 2000 because I was pretty sure I knew what to expect of him as president and, sure enough, that’s what he did.

It seems to me that the only ones who might be surprised are libertarians and that’s only because they were kidding themselves.

I was surprised by the push to destroy Social Security. Bush said “I have this political capital now and I’m going to spend it.” And he did. It sort of shows off his financial abilities. What do you do with capital? You spend it.
