From 1789 to 1949 the United States had a Department of War. In 1949 the department was dissolved, the Navy was brought into a unified command structure with the Army and Air Force, and the Department of Defense was formed. 1949 was also the year in which George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty Four was published.
I think it would be beneficial to return the DoD to the old name: Department of War.
I’m at a loss to come up with a name for the Department of Homeland Security that would describe what it really does. Department of Security Theatrics?
I’m taking nominations for a renaming of the DHS.

Department of Gropes and Snoops most accurately gets to what they do, but Department of Busybodies is pithier.
The Department of Enforced Paranoia?
When my brother and I went to Oregon a few years ago, I went outside to have a cigarette (which I haven’t had for 6 weeks now) at DFW, then had to go through one of the nekkid-izers.
What they wound up doing was confiscating the the zip-loc bag with the generic aspirins my SIL had given me for back pain.
Now don’t you feel more secure?
Sho nuff.
I told the woman running the unit that they should at least give us a printout of proper exercises to take care of those “problem” areas of our figures.
You know, Janis, that’s actually a great idea. When life hands you lemons, etc.
Department In Charge of Knowledgable Security.
